The Sacred Mayan Journey, seeks to recreate part of the history and the culture of the maya through a sacred ritual performed by the Maya from year to year to worship the Goddess Ixchel. The worship began days before in the market Polé (Now Xcaret), place that sold different products for “the offering” of the goddess. After dances, ceremonies and rituals of purification, the Maya came out paddling their canoes to the island of Cozumel to worship the goddess and obtain their blessings to the whole people. Today, you have the opportunity to transport you to the past and witness a wonderful ancient tradition.

One of the most important religious celebrations in Cozumel is the festival honoring St. Michael the Archangel since that is the patron saint of the town of San Miguel de Cozumel. The celebrations begin on September 21 with presentations of colorful procession leaving the church of San Miguel in the centre and across the city. During this time the residents attend mass and participate in processions daily using hipiles, costumes maya. Cozumel has honored St. Michael the Archangel as their patron saint since 1848 when the father Rejón a cure of Chemax Yucatan arrived to Cozumel with the settlers, and an image of San Miguel.
