Each year, the festival of El Cedral is held typically to commemorate the day of the Holy Cross as the arrival of the 21 founding families who took refuge in Cozumel in 1848 during the Caste War. Residents and visitors to enjoy throughout the week, from food stalls, traditional games, dances, shopping, and exhibitions.
This is a fishing tournament that takes place annually, where competitors from all over Mexico and other countries are participating in the catch of Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Wahoo, Dorado, Tuna, Barracuda and other species involved. The Sacred Mayan Journey, seeks to recreate part of the history and the culture of the maya through a sacred ritual performed by the Maya from year to year to worship the Goddess Ixchel. One of the most important religious celebrations in Cozumel is the festival honoring St. Michael the Archangel since that is the patron saint of the town of San Miguel de Cozumel. During this time the residents attend mass and participate in processions daily using hipiles, costumes maya. Cozumel has honored St. Michael the Archangel as their patron saint since 1848 when the father Rejón a cure of Chemax Yucatan arrived to Cozumel with the settlers, and an image of San Miguel.
